FAQ
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m) squared. For example, a 1.70 m person weighing 65 kg has a BMI of about 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5.
What are the weight categories?
We use the World Health Organization (WHO) standard for adults: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
How is the healthy weight range derived?
The normal-range boundaries 18.5 and 24.9 are each multiplied by your height in meters squared. For a height of 170 cm that gives roughly 53.5–72.0 kg as the healthy range.
Is BMI suitable for everyone?
BMI is a screening tool for the general adult population. It is not accurate for children, pregnant women or very muscular athletes, and it does not measure body fat distribution. Treat the result as a reference and consult a doctor for medical advice.
